Pea protein is an excellent protein source, rich in essential amino acids, with an excellent amino acid profile (AAS=0.96). This means that it contains 96% of the recommended daily intake of essential amino acids. (Protein and Amino acid requirements in human nutrition, Report of the Joint FAO/WHO/UNU Expert Consultation. WHO Technical Report Series 935, 2007).
Another uniqueness of pea protein is that it also contains a semi-essential amino acid in high amounts, which is arginine. Although the human body produces this substance, stress and exercise can reduce its formation, making external intake important. Arginine increases the production of creatine phosphate, insulin, and growth hormone, promoting lean muscle mass growth and fat burning, improving concentration. Another physiological benefit is that it is a precursor of nitric oxide, which can increase the amount of oxygen delivered to the heart.
The arginine content of pea protein is 8.7g/100g, proven to be higher than the arginine content of soy and casein. Its protein content is 90% (referring to the raw material), and its digestibility is 98% (Pr Tomé (INRA Paris), 2002).
