The coconut palm is believed to originate from Polynesia, but today it is widespread in tropical coastal areas. The coconut fruit is actually the seed of this palm. This seed is surrounded by a thick fibrous husk which turns yellow as it ripens. This husk is removed before the coconut fruit is usually sold in stores. Under the hard shell, you can find the white flesh, which is grated.
