Flavogard's active ingredient is Pycnogenol, the extract of French maritime pine (Pinus maritima) bark, which contains various antioxidants in concentrated form. Pycnogenol is one of the best known and researched natural substances in the world. The result of 40 years of intensive research is the known mechanisms of action, the benefits of which have been demonstrated in nearly 100 clinical trials. Nearly 700 different Pycnogenol-based products are available worldwide. The main biochemical effects of the extract demonstrated in clinical trials include: strong antioxidant properties that neutralize free radicals in circulation and stimulate the production of antioxidant enzymes within cells, recycling oxidized vitamin C into its bioactive form, protecting vitamin E from oxidation, binding collagen and elastin to protect them from enzymatic breakdown, thus increasing skin elasticity and strengthening blood vessel walls against leaks, promoting nitric oxide (NO) production, which plays an important role in dilating blood vessels and inhibiting blood clot formation, reducing the production of certain inflammatory agents, and improving the function of large and small blood vessels.
