The anti-inflammatory effect of proanthocyanidins is complemented by the antioxidant flavonoids. The components of essential oils have bactericidal effects. Triterpene derivatives, flavonoids (quercetin glycosides), carotenoids, and saponins are present. In inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, the complex effect of the above substances is significant. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of flavonoids are also enhanced by the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of carotenoids. They promote the healing of damaged mucous membranes. Recent research has placed particular emphasis on the triterpenes present in the drug, especially triterpene diols, such as faradiol and faradiol esters found as main components in calendula.
