Pea protein is an excellent source of protein, rich in essential amino acids, and has an excellent amino acid profile (AAS=0.96). This means that it contains 96% of the recommended daily intake value of essential amino acids. (Protein and Amino acid requirements in human nutrition, Report of the Joint FAO/WHO/UNU Expert Consultation. WHO Technical Report Series 935, 2007).
Another uniqueness of pea protein is that it contains a semi-essential amino acid in large quantities, which is arginine. Although the human body also produces this substance, stress and physical exercise reduce its formation, so external intake is important. Arginine increases creatine phosphate, insulin, and growth hormone production, favoring lean muscle mass growth and fat burning, improving concentration. Its positive physiological effect is that it is a precursor of nitric oxide, thus increasing the amount of oxygen transported to the heart.
The arginine content of pea protein is 8.7g/100g, proven to be higher than soy and casein arginine content. Its protein content is 90% (refers to the raw material), while its digestibility is 98% (Pr Tomé (INRA Paris), 2002).
