In the first half of the 20th century, the famous dentist and world traveler, Dr. Weston Price, who was head of research at the American Dental Association for a decade and a half, made numerous observations and publications which showed that an as yet unknown substance, which he named 'Activator X,' was responsible for healthy teeth and bone structure. He produced a special butter concentrate containing this substance in large quantities, which was able to treat tooth decay without drilling. Since then, this mysterious Activator X has been identified as vitamin K2! This special butter extract primarily contained vitamins K2 and D3, and also small amounts of vitamin A.
Recent research has shown that consuming large amounts of vitamin K1 can increase the production of vitamin K3 in the body, and it has been found that a significant portion of it converts to vitamin K2 in our tissues. That's why K-complex dietary supplements contain large amounts of K1 along with K2.
High doses of vitamins K1, K2, and K3 have been found to have anti-cancer effects in numerous clinical trials. In addition to promoting healthy bone structure and dental health, vitamin K2 has many other beneficial effects (e.g., Alzheimer's disease, insulin sensitivity).
Among our foods, K2 vitamin is found in significant quantities only in animal offal (especially brain, marrow, liver, and testicles), as well as in rather expensive aged cheeses beyond one and a half years (e.g. parmesan).
Let's be careful about choosing a K2 vitamin supplement and the dosage we consume!
There are several types of vitamin K2:
For K2 MK-4 (menaquinone-4), most studies have found it to be effective only when consumed in mega-doses of 15,000-45,000 mcg, as it is rapidly depleted from the blood within 1-2 hours.
On the other hand, K2 MK-7 (menaquinone-7) is effective in doses ranging from 45-200 mcg, as it is slowly cleared from the body and can be detected in the blood for 2-3 days.
Unfortunately, several products on the market in Hungary also use menaquinone-4 in ineffective amounts (e.g. 100mcg, while it has been proven to be completely ineffective up to 1500mcg). What's even worse is that these products do not indicate what kind of menaquinone they contain, so customers are basically taking empty capsules for a high price. Therefore, we should make sure to only buy products that clearly indicate this. If not, we should definitely inquire and ask the manufacturer for confirmation of the form of K2 vitamin it contains. If it's menaquinone-4, then we should take a quantity of 15-45 thousand micrograms, and if it's menaquinone-7, then 45-200mcg is sufficient.
Unfortunately, there's still no end here, as menaquinone-7 and -4 can also exist in so-called cis and trans forms. Only trans-menaquinones occur in nature and this is the effective form (opposite to fatty acids). Cis-menaquinones are ineffective. Synthetic K2 vitamins contain high amounts of cis-menaquinones!
In our product, we use only the naturally occurring trans form of the most active menaquinone-7 variant of vitamin K2, derived from flower essence oils rather than extracted from fermented soy protein isolate with bacteria (incorrectly referred to as natto extract, which also naturally contains the active menaquinone-7 in trans form).
The preparation contains vitamins K2 and K1 dissolved in coconut and palm oil extract (in so-called MCT oil), which further enhances its absorption. Due to its high stability, it also contains a natural vitamin E complex, i.e., mixed tocopherols extracted from sunflowers and not from soy. It does not contain any additives!
The benefits of regular intake of high-dose D3 vitamin (5-10,000 IU, i.e. 50-100 mcg) cannot be overstated, as it has risk-reducing, immune-boosting, and numerous other health-preserving effects that are essential to our well-being. However, since D3 vitamin enhances calcium absorption, without K2 vitamin it can increase calcium deposits in arteries and soft tissues. To prevent this, a minimum of 45 mcg of K2 MK-7 is needed. This is why we have created our K2 + D3 supplement. By consuming 1-2 servings daily, you can safely take a high dose of D3 vitamin. The K-Complex Forte and K2+D3 Forte are more expensive options, but for those who can afford it, I recommend taking 1-2 servings of these daily.
Overall, the key is to take 45-200mcg of K2 MK-7 and 5-10,000 IU of D3 daily. For K1 vitamin, around 1000mcg is recommended. It is safe to take much larger amounts of K1 and K2 vitamins.
