There are more than 1250 species of bamboo worldwide, with 100-120 species' shoots consumed, mainly in East and Southeast Asia. Bamboo shoots are not consumed for energy, but rather for their beneficial physiological effects, as they are low in calories but rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. As the shoot grows, its fiber content increases, making the bamboo tougher and more resistant.
