The career of lysine in supplements began when it was discovered to inhibit the replication of the herpes simplex virus in vitro (in test tubes) and in vivo (in living organisms). The herpes simplex (HSV) virus infects the nervous system and can replicate inside it. Once infected, a person has to live with it for life, as there is currently no method for complete eradication. It can hide in the body for a long time and can be reactivated by various factors such as fever, weakened immune system, stress, sunlight, menstruation, certain foods, mercury exposure during dental treatments, or viral infections. The prevalence of HSV-1 increases with age in society; in the 30-year-old age group in the USA, it affects 50% of the wealthy and 80% of the lower class. In Hungary, 80% of the population are carriers of the virus, with an estimated 2,000,000 people experiencing symptoms regularly. The other type of herpes simplex, HSV-2, is sexually transmitted, and the risk of infection increases with the number of sexual partners.
