Este timpul să ne confruntăm cu faptul că viziunea noastră dominantă asupra omului nu oferă răspunsuri la bolile fizice și psihologice care îi chinuie pe oamenii zilelor noastre. Nu trebuie să privim doar ciocănitoarea lui Darwin prin lentile evoluționiste, ci și pe omul epocii noastre, care trăiește într-o incompatibilitate tot mai gravă cu mediul său fizic și social. Această incompatibilitate înseamnă, pe scurt, că funcțiile noastre psihice s-au dezvoltat de-a lungul a milioane de ani adaptându-se la viața tribală și acum sunt rămășițe ale acelei lumi.
Failure, loneliness, unhappiness, and negative self-esteem all stem from thinking wrongly about ourselves and the world. The trap of self-esteem is self-esteem itself. The unsolvable problems would almost be missed if someone came and solved them once. Actually, no one has an interest in the solution. If there was a diet book that no one would gain weight back after, there would be no more diet foods and diet books to sell. And you couldn't 'slim down'. The world would be slimmer but a little grayer. Maybe the same goes for the problem of self-esteem.
