Nowadays, many people's faith in healthcare is shaken. This is not surprising, as we often experience conflicting experiences in doctor's offices and hospitals. Every day we hear about the amazing achievements of medical science, while cancer, diabetes, or cardiovascular diseases are known to claim more victims each year. We helplessly observe the physical and mental decline of our aging loved ones, as it seems there is no solution. Perhaps, even if we run from doctor to doctor, we cannot find a cure for our problems. Gábor Szendi, the leading critic of Western-type nutrition and lifestyle in Hungary, claims that fatal errors would occur even if everything worked as smoothly as possible in healthcare. The problem is systemic. It stems from the perspective of modern medicine, which is unable to free itself from outdated dogmas. Would this be an internal matter of a profession? No, it is a deadly serious issue affecting all of us. Decision made on the basis of these dogmas – typically driven by good intentions – ultimately lead to tragic deaths or severe deterioration in quality of life. Relying on the results of scientific research, Szendi reveals in an engaging style the most serious mistakes of modern medicine, digging down to the roots. Why do we experience vitamin deficiencies? Why is science unwilling to seriously consider humans' evolutionary past? Is it truly an inevitable consequence of our long lives to spend our later years shrinking and deteriorating mentally? Is daily stress really to blame for the epidemic spread of depression? Should we really worry about our high cholesterol levels? Is it absolutely necessary to get vaccinated against the flu before the flu season? What do we gain from cancer screenings? "Detours in Medicine" is not a mere indictment – it also offers solutions. The author believes that diseases can primarily be avoided through prevention, but even if trouble is already upon us, it is not too late: uncovering the true causes of diseases helps in overcoming and reversing them. And for this, we need not a multitude of drugs, but a rediscovery of our evolutionarily optimal lifestyle.

GÁBOR SZENDI, writer and psychologist, the popularizer and advocate of the paleolithic diet in Hungary, a freethinker. According to his opinion, our modern world has drifted light years away from the lifestyle we have evolved with over millions of years. Even though we live in big cities surrounded by super-intelligent gadgets, our bodies and brains still belong to a hunting-gathering tribe. If we aspire to a fuller and happier life, we need to first understand what we were designed for.
