Its name is of Greek origin, composed of the chloros meaning green and the ella meaning small suffix, thus in translation, chlorella means little green. German biochemist Otto Heinrich Warburg, who received the Nobel Prize for his research on cellular respiration, also studied the photosynthesis of chlorella, and Melvin Calvin was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research on chlorella's carbon dioxide uptake.
