About Wheat Germ Oil
Latin name: Triticum aestivum
Recommended application:
for nourishing dry, mature skin
Production, cultivation, distribution
Wheat germ oil (Tritici aestivi oleum) is extracted from the germ of wheat (Triticum aestivum), a member of the grass family (Poaceae), with an average yield of 7-12%, and then refined after extraction.
Composition, quality
Crude oil has a distinctive and pleasant odor, with a golden-yellow or brownish-yellow color. About 80-85% of the oil consists of mono- or polyunsaturated fatty acid esters (linoleic, oleic, alpha-linolenic acids), alongside a significant amount of saturated palmitic acid ester (5-10%). In addition to the mentioned fatty acids, it also contains E-vitamins (tocopherols) and tocotrienols (substances belonging to the family of E-vitamins). Refined wheat germ oil (Tritici aestivi oleum raffinatum) is officially recognized in the VIII. Hungarian Pharmacopoeia.
Usage
Wheat germ oil is an excellent skin care, skin nourishing, and wound healing oil. Its use can reduce the risk of certain skin diseases caused by linoleic acid deficiency (e.g. eczematous skin processes, psoriasis) and plays a role in slowing down the skin aging process. Thanks to its vitamin E content, it makes the skin elastic and smooth, which is why it is a common ingredient in cosmetic creams and body lotions. It is usually added in amounts of 5-15% to base oils and cosmetic products.
