Floarea de chimen (Nigella sativa) este o specie de plante care face parte din genul Nigella din familia Ranunculaceae. Are originea în Asia de Vest și Africa de Nord. Este o plantă veche din punct de vedere cultural, semințele sale fiind folosite ca și mirodenii și medicamente încă din antichitate (astăzi folosite doar ca și mirodenii).
It has a slightly onion-like taste, its scent reminiscent of pepper and thyme. Primarily used in Arab, Turkish, and Indian cuisine. In the Middle East, it is sprinkled on pastries and breads. In Indian cuisine, it is a component of the Bengali five-spice blend, used to flavor dhals and curries. In Turkey, it is an ingredient in the mesir sweets.
For centuries, it has been used as a medicine in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. It was used to treat respiratory, stomach, kidney, liver diseases, to strengthen the circulatory and immune system, as an anti-inflammatory, anesthetic, antiallergic, etc.
It was used in folk medicine to reduce bloating and increase the milk production of breastfeeding mothers.
