Sea buckthorn belongs to the family of silver bushes. It grows on sand dunes by the sea, riverbanks, and in Hungary it lives on the sandy soil of the Danube and Drava rivers. It is native and protected in our country. Already in ancient times it was recognized that sea buckthorn berries and leaves have healing properties.
The fruit ripens from early August to the end of September. Covered with a touch of frost, the otherwise bitter, tangy fruit becomes sweet.
This fruit is rich in vitamin C, but also contains vitamin A, as well as malic acid, mannitol, fatty oils, and flavonoids. It also contains essential fatty acids and vitamin E. This tiny fruit contains ten times more vitamin C than a lemon. The fruit is acidic and is commonly used as a medicinal ingredient.
