The coconut is the fruit of the coconut palm tree, which can grow up to thirty meters tall. The origin of the plant is not completely clear, but Southeast Asia is likely to have been its homeland, from where germinating coconuts capable of sprouting floated on the sea to further, tropical climate areas, and human hands also played a big role in its spread.
Coconut flour is a byproduct of coconut milk production, essentially dried coconut meat that is finely ground.
Importance, impacts:
Compared to other flours, coconut flour has low carbohydrate content and high levels of protein, fat, and fiber, making it recommended for diabetics and those following a low-carb diet. Additionally, coconut flour is gluten-free, so it can be consumed by those with gluten sensitivities.
Among minerals, it is significant in magnesium content, but it also contains iron and selenium, among others.
Usage:
Coconut flour is widely used, for example, in making cakes, cookies, and breads, but for those who have not used it yet, it is worth handling it carefully, as coconut flour can bring surprises.
Coconut flour has a particularly good water-binding capacity, meaning it absorbs a much larger amount of liquid than usual. This should be taken into account when measuring liquids, and the finished products will also be somewhat drier for the same reason. This effect can be avoided by mixing coconut flour with some kind of seed flour.
To prevent clumping, it is advisable to sift the coconut flour thoroughly before using.
