Magnesium sulfate is used externally (in the form of Epsom salt) and internally as well.
The main external use is as a bath salt preparation, especially in foot baths to soothe sore feet. These baths are said to alleviate muscle pain, soreness, or injuries and to expedite healing. The potential health benefits of magnesium sulfate are reflected in medical studies that speak to magnesium's effects on treatment-resistant depression, as well as its role as a migraine and chronic pain pain reliever.
Internally, magnesium sulfate can be administered orally, respiratorily, or intravenously. Its internal use includes therapy for magnesium deficiency, treatment of acute and severe arrhythmias, bronchodilation in the treatment of asthma, and as an antispasmodic.
It can also be used as a laxative. May contain traces of peanuts, nuts, and sesame seeds.
