The garden katicavirá (Nigella sativa) is a plant species belonging to the Nigella genus of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). It originates from West Asia and North Africa. It is a very old cultivated plant; its seeds were used as a spice and medicine in ancient times (now used only as a spice).
It has a slightly onion-like taste, its scent reminiscent of pepper and thyme. Primarily used in Arab, Turkish, and Indian cuisine. In the Middle East, it is sprinkled on pastries and breads. In Indian cuisine, it is a component of the Bengali five-spice blend, used to flavor dhals and curries. In Turkey, it is an ingredient in the mesir sweets.
