The coconut palm is believed to originate from Polynesia, but today it is widespread in tropical coastal areas. The coconut is actually the seed of this palm. The seed is surrounded by a thick fibrous husk, which turns yellow when ripe. This husk is removed, so the coconut is usually sold in stores without it.
